Aire Logic is delighted that their work with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust has won the ‘Using Technology to Improve Efficiency’ category of the Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) Innovation, Improvement and Impact Awards 2018. Our entry “Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust: Taking on the interoperability challenge with PPM+” demonstrates that the NHS can build and deploy its own clinically led EHR cost-effectively, collaboratively and on a large scale.
The awards ceremony took place as part of the third AHSN Innovation, Improvement and Impact Conference on Wednesday 31st January at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds.
The Innovation, Improvement and Impact Conference and Awards was established in 2015 by the Y&H AHSN to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the region’s health economy and life sciences sector. The day-long event provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals and industry colleagues to learn more about the work of the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN and the benefits it is delivering both locally and nationally.
Richard Stubbs, Chief Executive Officer of the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN said “Our annual conference provides us with a great opportunity to get together with colleagues from the NHS, academia and industry to celebrate innovation in the region. It also enables us to showcase our achievements and demonstrate how, by working together, we can deliver better healthcare for patients and bring benefits to the region’s health economy.
Since being set up in 2013, England’s 15 AHSNs have spread over 200 innovations through 11,000 locations, benefitting six million people, creating over 500 jobs and leveraging £330 million investment to improve health and support the NHS, social care and industry innovators.”
PPM+ was specifically designed as a versatile technology platform. For instance a core module in the EHR is its digital forms-based technology, enabling massive scale roll-out and expansion of clinical recording with relatively small effort and cost to the trust. The PPM+ enterprise platform has become mission critical to the operation of the trust and wider region. It supports around 350,000 paperless record submissions every month (with this figure rapidly increasing). The system has ~16,000 users, with over 5,000 actively writing into the EHR.
Beyond LTHT, PPM+ supports West Yorkshire’s shared Acute Oncology Care Record, the Yorkshire & Humber Genomics Medical Centre, the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (early pilot), and the Leeds Care Record (LCR) which integrates health and social care across the city.
The PPM+ project has also enabled massive cost savings across the Trust and wider region. In 2016-2017, the LCR efficiency benefits alone were over £3 million.
Dr Michael Odling-Smee, Technical Director at Aire Logic said “We are delighted that our collaborative work with LTHT to deliver the PPM+ eforms solution has been recognised by the AHSN. We’re extremely proud of our collective success and really look forward to working with the LTHT team to further improve the solution, and ultimately, to continue improving patient outcomes across the Trust.”
